“Salome with the Head of John the Baptist”

Taken at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. As the legend goes, Salome, the daughter of a king, was so angered by John the Baptist’s unwillingness to love her that she ordered his head be brought to her on a silver platter. I love the use of color in this portrait and the dramatic, almost “shock value” depiction of that event. The story of Salome and John was even given the (rather bad, or so I’ve heard) operatic treatment.
