Tonys Countdown Special: #5

Surprise! Because I’ll be out seeing Cagney at the York Theatre on Saturday, I’m treating you to the next installment of our special Tony Awards series TODAY! Don’t forget to comment with your opinion of my choices! And without further ado, the 5th best Tony-winning performance of the past decade is…drum roll please…

VICTORIA CLARK (The Light in the Piazza, 2005)

In advance, I am so sorry that this was the best legit video I could find. It really doesn’t do justice to the fact that Victoria Clark’s heartbreaking and sincere performance (as a mother trying to protect her mildly disabled daughter) anchored this Adam Guettel show. Did you know that Adam Guettel is the grandson of Richard Rodgers? He’s kind of got greatness in his blood! But I digress- Clark, in fact, is nominated for a Tony Award this year for her work in Gigi. But I think the role she had in The Light in the Piazza will be the one for which she is most remembered. Time and time again, she shows off her rich soprano pipes as well as her acting capabilities. She’s recently been seen exercising comedic chops; however, Margaret Johnson was a dramatic part that required a lot of vocal stamina and soul-searching. Clark recently had a full-circle moment when she directed the piece at Pace University. I was fortunate enough to meet Victoria Clark this year and she couldn’t have been kinder or more supportive of my struggles as a mezzo-soprano!
